That day, it was medieval entertainment around the castle.
The kids loved it! 🤩

Camping, it's vacation time!

My family (my partner, our two children and I) go camping every year. It’s the way we prefer to spend our vacations: the great outdoors, contact with nature, freedom for the kids in a safe space, on-site activities, meeting new people.

But we don’t stay at the campsite all the time!
We like to discover the region, the surrounding sites, the history of the place. This was our first stay in the Gorges du Tarn and we explored the surrounding area.

First stop, the nearest one: Château de Peyrelade. Onwards and upwards!

The Château de Peyrelade

A short 25-minute walk from the campsite, to get away from the car for a while. A breathtaking panorama of the river and the Tarn valley below.

As soon as we arrived at the château, I was struck by the imposing silhouette of this medieval fortress, its ramparts standing proud against an azure sky. And the breathtaking panorama of the river and Tarn valley below.

Walking through the entrance, I was immediately transported back to the Middle Ages. Knights in armor, draped in brilliant colors, strolled through the courtyard. One of them, armed with sword and shield, greeted me with a mysterious smile. I even dared to approach for a photo with the children!

We were very lucky, as medieval entertainment was taking place at the château that day. The entertainment was captivating. With enthusiastic children around me, I climbed the ramparts to enjoy a spectacular view over the valley. Later, I attended a medieval combat demonstration: the clash of swords sounded like an echo from the past.

Every corner of the château tells a story. Between the old stones, I could almost hear the whispers of those who lived there centuries ago. This blend of nature, history and interaction totally won me over.

If you’re looking for an outing that combines discovery and emotion, go for it! Château de Peyrelade is a real time machine.

The children are already enchanted by the view, and that’s not the end of the surprises… 🏰 Because on this day, medieval entertainment takes place at the château!

La Graufesenque in Millau : a journey back to Roman times

To take a step back in history, we visited the Gallo-Roman site of La Graufesenque in Millau… a fascinating ancient site for children! The heritage team offers fun workshops and captivating tours to plunge you into the world of Gallo-Roman potters. It’s an educational adventure that’s ideal for learning while having fun.

Experience Romaine in Millau!

With live shows, fun workshops, combat demonstrations and historical costumes, your children will discover history while having fun. A life-size immersion in the past, in the heart of a site steeped in history.

And off we went in the footsteps of the dinosaurs 🦖

A few kilometers from Millau, around the semi-troglodytic village of Peyre, classified as one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages, you can follow the dinosaurs on the limestone path.
Fortunately, the educational panels on site helped us to answer the children’s many questions!

La Couvertoirade Cité des Templiers du Larzac

The village of Peyre also offered us a magnificent view of the famous Millau Viaduct.

We then headed up to the Larzac plateau to visit the Templar town of La Couvertoirade. We really enjoyed wandering through the narrow streets lined with craftsmen’s stalls, immersing ourselves in the medieval atmosphere of this superbly preserved fortified village.

Our favorite

In fact, we discovered that there was a Templiers Hospitaliers du Larzac tour with activities for children every day of the week; 1 activity per site!
La commanderie du Larzac at Sainte Eulalie de Cernon, Tour du Viala du Pas de Jaux, La Cavalerie, Fort de Saint Jean d’Alcas and Cité de la Couvertoirade…

A treat for the whole family!

We had a very full stay. But we didn’t see everything – there are plenty of other places to discover in the region.
We’ve chosen our own itinerary, now it’s up to you to make yours!
